I have just saved up my pennies and bought my first weather station after years of wanting one. So, today I have installed all my sensors and console (L2310) … The console seems to be working fine, all sensors are providing data and it looks to be a fairly accurate description of whats happening outside…
Now for the problems…
My manual rain guage shows 5.5mm for todays rainfall and my 2310 rain guage has measured 3.5mm… both are side by side … which is correct? Is there a setting I should be making to correct this anomaly?
Perhaps the most frustrating… I have dedicated my old laptop to running WD 24/7 and my L2310 is connected to COM1. The issues I am having with both the supplied software and the WD software is the unbelievably slow data transfer rate… COM port is set to 9600 baud. Should this be different? When using WD, the data recieved light is green, but the transfer seems unbelievably slow… also the data quality light always stays red…How long should a L2310 take to “synchronise” and upload its data to a PC??? The Laptop is 3 years old…Also, none of my graphs appear to change, even if data is being uploaded…albeit very slowly!!
I am a bit lost by all of this and would love any help you can offer as I am a COMPLETE novice but really love the site, the software and the concept of amateur forecasting. If anyone can help me with the setup process that would be superb. Hopefully someone can help!!
Hi
best thing, give me a call, tomorrow (sunday), 092351377, since you live in NZ (not all that far from me (i live 30 minutes north of Waiuku)
it might be that you need to turn off the data extraction at start up?
(see under control panel, datalogger setup)
the updating of normal live data should be fast (every 6 seconds) if wired setup.
but maybe there is something not right with the com port on that pc?
Mate I don’t want to bother you to much !! I have been reading thru all the Forum/FAQ and questions and have managed to get the whole system up and running ok… however I may have gone to far!!
I had it working so I could see the weather station constantly polling the WD software on the PC…so I have been sitting here watching the olympics at the WD dials!! Its so addictive!! The wife thinks I am crazy!! Anyway, I was wondering why the graphs were not updating very quickly so I changed the data logging to 1 minute samples… however, this seems to have affected the weather staion polling to the PC and now the graphs update, but the polling has stopped…
Not quite sure how to get it back to how it was !!!
Is there a basic default setup that I can put in that will suit the 2310 and show the polling/realtime data and update the graphs at a reasonable rate as well?? I see my comm port is nor showing as being disconnected… not sure if it was always like that or not…
It was all working very well tho, and I will be purchasing the software…fantastic stuff!!
Best regards
Andrew

Hi
yes, its very addictive…and my wife knows i am crazy, LOL
it sounds like you must have it in client mode (i.e it will say that across the top of of the program)
go to setup, ftp/internet setup, client server setup
and then turn off the Switch theer , on the right hand side
i am not sure what you mean by logging mode, weather display updates the logs every minute…
what you could do is start over, and reset your settings:
delete the file wdisplay.ini from c:\windows or c:\winnt
and then run regedit.exe and search for the key wdisplayftp.ini in the registry, and then delete that key (do this while wd is not running)
then wd will start up like brand new
or, install to a new directory, and then create a file there called 2wd.txt
and start wd there…i.e will start up like brand new…i.e you will have to enter settings again
Just in from moving the cows, and thought I’d try your suggestions…
I have followed your instructions to the letter. However, I must have a bad COM port, as at the top of the WD display I have the following :
Weather Display - Ver10.15z - Registered WS2310 Comm Port OK
Thye PC does not appear to be seeing the console. I have the switch turned to OFF in the FTP/Internet/Client settings as instructed. My Data recieved light is green, however, the polling light is only green and is not flashing as it has done before. The data recieved count has not moved from zero. The data quality light is an ominous red…I have tried rebooting the machine to no avail.
I am gutted, as the PC was working fine until I messed around with the graph settings. However it has all been restored as instructed by you. Interestingly, when it works, the WD software shows the realtime conditions ok, but the graphs do not seem to update regularly…that was what I meant by “changing the data logging rate” to increase the graphs recording timeframe.
Any other words of advice Brian!! I am well and truly stumped!!
Best regards (at least its sunny - the paddocks can dry out a bit!)

hi
just in from doing some relief milking
i would try a restart, as it might be that it mis fired waking up the console…
re graphs:
check under view, program error log for any errors
and also right mouse click on the main screen graph and then you can select last 6 hours too…and you can have that as the default…see under setup, graph setup
I have now installed the WD software on the Farm PC, a brand new P4 3Ghz machine with fully working everything. Am still having the same problems. I have assumed that the COM port ont he back (there is only one serial COM port, the rest are USB) so have set it as COM 1 in the setup. All of the rest of the settings are as described. Still the same result, no polling or data is being sent from the console. I wonder if I should power the consolde down and see if that works? Is it possible I have a faulty console? Not sure what else I can try!! I will tryuninstalling and reinstalling WD on the new PC and restarting the PC and weather console and see how it goes.
How many are you milking? We have a beef run off up here just past Woodhill, I see there is another amateur weatherstation up in Mcleods Rd, Sth Head!!
Must admit to feeling defeated this morning…yes the serial cable is connected to the correct port, ( I think i have checked it about a zillion times! )
Since my last post, I have powered down the PC, powered down the console and restarted everything… still, no change…
Thanks for all the advice tho guys, I am thinking the LaCrosse Console Communications port is dodgy, altho, in saying that, it did work ok for around 4 hours lastnight, but even then, when the real time weather data was being displayed, the graphs were not updating terribly quickly.
I have tried the Heavy Weather software and none of the data is coming up…so I reckon its a bad console. Has anyone ever had to return product to WeatherDownUnder in Australia!!! :?:
hi
i have a console here…we could do a swap
(but it has a crack in the cover, thats all)
but, also, with the power down of the ws2310, you need to wait about 10 minutes for all the power to drain out (and make sure the batteries are removed too)
try that
Gidday Brian , I’ll try that… could I send you my 2310 to test and see if its ok??
Am I correct in ASSUMING that COM1 is the correct COM number for my PC that actually only have one COM port? I have checked in Device manager and note that the COM port is running OK (set at 9600) with no conflicts.
 Another thing that could be a issue that I have thought of… My 2310 did NOT come with a 240V mains power supply… so I purchased one from DSE, now I could find no specs in the user manual regarding the power supply other than 6V DC, so I have a multivoltage adaptor set at 6V DC capable of delivering 500Ma MAX. Does the 2310 require more supply capability???
This is the only thing I can think of that is not as per the manual/specification…
Desperation is setting in!! lol
Have powered it down for 10mins and restarted… still doing the same thing… I note that somehow, it has retained the rainfall amount even tho it was off for 14minutes… :?: :?:
Its now in the synchro mode… I have the WD software connected and it sees the console, however the usual story…green data recieved light is ON, no data has been recieved (data count satys on zero) and the data quality light is red.
Yes, everything lights up as it should on power up on the console.
The Data recieved light stays a constant green, and maybe flickers once every thirty seconds. It definately does not continuously flash as it did last night.
Also the alarm light to the right of the data quality light (which as remained red) is not flashing green/red as it used to either…
it should not be staying green like that…hummm
thats not correct
check again the data extraction at start up is not enabled…see under setup, control panel, data logger setup
one last thing:
email me your settings file:
wdisplay.ini from c:\windows or c:\winnt
and I will try it here
but , otherwise, yes…but you can use my console (borrow)
what is your address?
just heading out on a family bike ride with the kids…
re relief milking: only 60 cows at the moment, LOL
(just a real old 12 a side herringbone, on top of a 700 foot hill over looking the tasman!)
its a real hard case cowsshed…really needs a bulldozer…
Brian, your not going to believe this…absolutely bizzare…
Its now working… well kind of anyway… I have lost all input to the console display from the external sensor… I have made NO changes to any of the cabling … (the external sensors were working ok, or so I thought!) Anyway, now the console is sending data at a rapid rate to the PC and the graphs are updating each minute as selected, data quality light is green, polling light is flashing and data recieved is flashing and green…
Ok, I am absolutely confused… I might try setting the sensors to wireless?? I thought if you used mains supply the sensors did not need batteries???
My address is 2322 State Highway 16, Te Pua, Helensville RD2. If you let me know yours, I cn send you mine in a swap for security if you like? Maybe I have a sensor issue confusing the console?? as it appears to be working now?
Mate… bit much for a farmer (ex sparky) like me!! 8O
hi
back from the bike ride…
good news!
now, what I suggest, is replacing the cable between the temp/hum sensor and the anenometer with a shielded cable, if it has not been done already
as long as the temp/hum sensor is plugged directly into the console, then its not running in wireless mode,…
keep an eye on it, we might not need to do a swap?
(as mine does have a crack on the console)
