Is it me or has anybody else noticed how hyper active 9.96a is in comparison to previous releases.
I run WD on a laptop, and have noticed how this is going crazy with disk activity, it seems to be doing so much housekeeping it’s incredible.
Previously i could sit there in the early hours and it would do the normal sync of the filesystem, now it’s continually (and around every 1-2 seconds) undertaking some form of disk activity.
Nothings changed on the laptop apart from the release, and it’s really noticeable.
More importantly now, I’ve ditched my previous release, and I need to get hold of a copy of 9.95#, this thing is doing my head in, as it’s right next to me and disk seeking like crazy.
Anybody tell me where I can get an old version, (learnt my lesson to hold an old copy in reserve)
Just put 9,95e back on.
Wow what a difference, it’s so much less active it’s incredible.
I know having communicated with Brian, there’s no “apparent” reason, but boy oh boy it’s so different.
Figure I’ll have to stick with this release for now then.
(But I’d love to know what changed to cause such a difference)
((Inquizative minds…)
More importantly save wearing an old laptop, which has a perfect niche running WD…
I installed 9.96b and a I noticed a couple of things. One, no more FTPUPD crashing and second, I don’t know if this is part of what you noticed but my laptop is now shutting off the display from inactivity in 9.96b when it never shutoff in the 9.96a version. Who knows, maybe the activity issue has been solved.

Thanks for the update, I’ll give it a try, keeping the 9.95 handy just in case

Just downloaded 9.96e, and notice it still suffers from hyperactivity, so back I go 9.95, something definately slipped in on 9.96, that makes my system go crazy. Having popped in and out of 9.95, I know it is release related, so seems like I’m not be moving forward now. with later releases.
Some suggestions. Check that you don’t have the raw ultimeter data logging turned on. Check the memory usage, maybe the new version is using just enough more memory to cause XP to do a lot of memory/disk swapping, try changing the swap file size. Use win2k instead.
yes, thats good advice nikoshepard about the memory use and the swap size…
please check that Q with task manager and let me know
(and compare memory use with the older version)
and or try killing off any not needed programs running to test this theory
i have had other people report strange behaviour with the recent verison, and it all seems to be on win98 first version, i think…so that must be a clue
symptoms include the program locking up for a minute at a time, etc
i have taken something out i added recently, to a new 9.97a
pleast try that one
thanks

Loaded 9.97b running main screen only:
Right having spent some time monitoring and checking here's my findings:
Raw ultimeter is turned OFF
System is win98 133Mhz with 48Mb mem(tiz and old laptop)
Memory usage 100%
CPU usage 34%~
Disk thrpt 0kb to around 28kb
Cache hit 51% constant
Swap file size 122Mb
Threads constant 104~
Page faults 0 - 1
Cache used typically 2.8Mb
GDI free 71%
Open files stays constant ~230
Writes per sec 0 - 2
Watching the monitoring, I find when a graph update happens we drive CPU usage to 100%
Disk thrpt climbs 150kb/sec
Page faults climb as does writes/sec
So kinda like what I’d expect to see.
Running 9.95e
Memory usage 100%
CPU usage 34%~
Disk thrpt 0kb to around 28kb
Cache hit 50% constant
Swap file size 122Mb
Threads constant 107
Page faults ~15 - 20
Cache used typically 4.5 - 5.1Mb
GDI free 71%
Open files stays constant ~237
Writes/sec 0 - 2
Watching the monitoring, I find when a graph update happens we drive CPU usage to 100%
Disk thrpt climbs 150kb/sec
Page faults climb to ~200
Got to be honest, it does appear that it is equal in monitoring to 9.95a.
Stats don’t say it all though, I still think the frequency of disk access is higher since 9.96.
So I think I’ll stay with 9.95 for now, until I can get a better handle on why the disk access frequency is higher since 9.96.
Sorry Brian I tried the stats way, so any idea what it might be in win98, that seems to changed and still be in 9.97 :?:
i tried the latest vers on my old win98 133mh 48mb pc desktop, 18 hour run overnight
not much memory left, thats for sure…
disk actiivity is OK…
just a spurge every minute
so iam not sure why its bad for you latptop…i guess its grown too big
Brian
I figured after loading 9.97 I’d try and see how it goes.
The problem is I sit right next to the old laptop, and it’s more the fact it’s buggin’ me as it’s so active.
To be honest I’m just pleased as it is, it’s gathering data, it shows me visually what’s going on, and enables me to keep an eye of the weather around, here.
So to be honest it might just be a foible of mine, I just hate noisy computers, and they sound so loud when your in a quiet environment, no kids no dog, just me and the computers.
Now back to learning more about what I can do with WD.
