Hardware / OS Advice

,

Hi,
I have a 233mhz MMX laptop with under 256 mb ram. I have tried to run WD on this box with both Windows 98SE and Windows 2000 Professional.

Both seem to run ok as long as the main internet switch is off. Under win 2K, it runs at around 10% or less cpu, but as soon as I turn on the internet switch, it jumps to 98-99% and bogs the machine down.

My question is if I will fair better with this machine if I run Mandrake Linux on it with the Linux version of WD.

I have a WS2515 connected via usb-serial adapter. Any direction would be very appreciated… And, great software! I’m finally getting some fun out of my weather station!

 Thanks Very Much!

that is my system load, WD when doing internet updates only uses about 10% of my AMD 2000, so roughly 166 Mhz on Debian with KDE…

however, I don’t think that the WD linux is currently supporting the usb-adapter, so I guess windoze

George,

I’ve run WD successfully in the past with a similar configuration (actually only 80 megs of memory) and W98SE, Herb is running fine with

I run WD on a dedicated 266MHz PC, Windows 98, with only 128MB of memory. That includes downloads from NOAA and uploads to a webpage every 10 minutes.
How often are you actually FTP’ing something, and what else do you have on the machine? I would expect webfile update/FTP to push CPU to peak at 100% for the time that it’s running, but not to stick at that level.

Thank you for the responses…

The good news is that the laptop also has a native serial port, so with that said, would you go for Mandrake/Linux over windows?

And, I’m uploading every 15 minutes, or at least trying!

hi
sounds like wd is doing more than it should…
email me your settings files, wdisplay.ini from c:\windows or c:\winnt
and
wdisplayftp.reg after going action, back up registry now, from the folder databackup

I would go linux, but I am bias

but, both versions work very good

Brian,
I sent you my files…
Thanks again…

Don’t suppose you have an absolute bare-bones installation guide for the Linux side of it, i.e. what packages are required, so I don’t do a complete install.
Also - once WD is setup and running is it possible to shut down the X server, or is that a vital part of the equation.

Many thanks
Colin.

hi
if you go to setup, control panel, customise internet and file creation setup, you have lots of files ticked to update each minute
Untick those 1 minute tick boxes, and the use 1 minute for each (do that first), in the top right hand corner of the customise internet and file creation setup

linux:
Vergil is the expert on linux, not me, LOL
x server…wd does run as a graphical x window program, and so i dont know what will happen if you shut down the x windows

just heard that my wireless broadnabd installation has been delayed until thursday :frowning:
Cheers
Brian

Hi Brian - thanks - yes I did mean to direct my question to Vergil, must remember to address questions correctly

Darn nuisance about the broadband. Who did you find that was providing coverage out there?

hi
its BCL/Xtra/Telecom , broadcast from the Bombay hills

they were waiting on a piece of equipment to arrive, but it has been delayed…(from Whangerei)

x server appears to be important…

Brian,
I did as you suggested and all is fine now…

I guess it’s a good idea to walk before I run… Thanks again.

LOL
those tick boxes are tempting!
