forum time

Chris
i think when the clocks went back last week the forum clock went back 2 hours instead of one as it appears to be an hour slow
time of this post 16.24 GMT

Looks like you are correct. We are in a zone that doesn’t change… always MST (-700 UTC)… the forum is off by one hour. Says its 8:44 when it really is 9:44.

Forum time is user-selectable…

Profile… Preferences

Which is properly set to -700 which means the forums if properly set to UTC should show the correct time.

Before Daylight saving time ended, it worked fine, now it doesn’t.

Is that any better?

Getting the clock right in a multi-time zone environment is tricky. Do I keep the server on GMT or let it track DST. And if the server tracks DST then I need to make sure the forum software stays in step as well. Or do I let the server do it’s own thing and just adjust the forum?

Arrgggghhhh…my brain hurts :silly:

No, now I have to change mine!

There are three settings that affect forum time…

  1. System clock time. The server is currently on GMT (as I am) and it’s set to the correct time (in GMT)

  2. There is a forum offset value which was set at -1, but is now set to zero.

  3. Each user has a personal time offset (not a time zone) to correct forum time to local time. Mine was set at 1, but it’s now set to zero.

I think the server must be tracking DST. So when I first set the forum up I put the overall -1 offset in to set forum time to GMT as well. I then had to set my personal offset to 1 to give me DST local time.

The server now appears to have reverted to GMT which puts everyone an hour adrift. I’ll try and work out what’s causing the server to follow DST and stop it doing it. It’s probably best to keep the server and forum on GMT and then let everyone sort out their own time offsets if/when their own DST starts/ends.

I don’t know if it’s any better now, but I do know there are some instances when the US end of DST isn’t the same as the European end of DST. I know this happened at least once in the mid to late 90’s because all our Netware servers had the wrong time for a week because the US put their clocks back earlier than Europe and the (US) Netware developers hadn’t accounted for that in their code. If I recall correctly, it’s something like if DST would end on the 29th that’s allowed in Europe, but not in the US, so it reverts to 22nd in the US and stays at 29th in Europe.

I demand that you now randomly change the offset… once an hour.

You can, but more people will notice you have a negative climate the more messages you post

Well. I’m in -7 and it works fine for me before and after DST, but then CA does change, I’m not quite sure how it could know that your -7 doesn’t, and mine does

Ok Chris thanks for sorting

Well, this was true when I was typing it, but now I’ve lost an hour of my life

That sounds suspiciously like Shakespeare? That’s not allowed…didn’t you read the registration message…I’m sure it said ‘No Shakespeare’.

You agree, through your use of this forum, that you will not post any material which is false, defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, vulgar, hateful, harassing, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, threatening, invasive of a person’s privacy, adult material, or otherwise in violation of any United Kingdon or International law. AND ABSOLUTELY NO QUOTING SHAKESPEARE!

My God, it does say that.

Not only that but “Appropriate sanctions may be applicable.” So, to sanction, or not to sanction? That is the question…

now that is funny

Is that a african or european swallow?
