Forum login longevity

A user has asked why he doesn’t need to log in every day and wondered whether there’s no longer a username/password.

With Discourse there is indeed a username and password and you will have had to use it at least once to log into the forum. If you were a user of the ‘old’ (SMF) forum then your username and password are the same on this forum as they were on that forum. You

Unlike the ‘old’ forum Discourse has no equivalent of anything shorter than an ‘Indefinite’ login, so you won’t normally get logged out. Once you log in from a specific PC/browser combination a cookie (not one of those evil tracking cookies - no other domain can use the cookie) is created which is used to let you back in until one of a few things change, i.e.

  1. You change to a different PC/browser combination
  2. You delete the cookie in the browser
  3. You log out
  4. I make a change to the forum which invalidates your cookie. This isn’t something that will happen very often though.

So, if you use the same PC and browser every day there’s nothing stopping you from staying logged in for long periods. It’s up to you though. If you prefer to logout at the end of each session and log back in again next time that’s perfectly OK too.
