First Purchase

I am new to the forum - registered today - and am interested in buying a weather station, for general interest purposes only.

I have taken a general look, and it seems that Oregon and Davis offer good products - with the latter seeming to be considerably more expensive.

Are the Davis products worth the extra money?

Also, if I bought an American model (the exchange rate is very favourable at the moment!) will it only display temperature in

I have just started as well. I went for a Davis but you are correct, they are more expensive. I am very pleased with my Vantage Pro, all the posts I read about which one to get said the Davis had the best features if you can stretch to it. I’ll leave others with first hand experience to tell you about the WMR series

Be aware that if you buy from outside the EU not only will you be hit with VAT and Duty by UK Customs you will also be transmitting illegally (with a Davis system, not sure about Oregon) if you go wireless as the US versions use a frequency which is not permitted anywhere in the EU, that could also get expensive if caught.

IIRC Oregon (US version) would be “illegal” too…

but the Davis (US version) does display Celsius

in fact the Davis will do all metric as well… I think.

I bought my WMR928N from germany, Tax paid in Germany so no problems with tax, delivered in 5 days and saved

My WMR928N has worked well for the last 21 months. The WM-918 (wired version) I had before that worked well too. If you’ve got the money the Davis stuff is probably a better way to go, but the OS stuff works well enough.

As for not connecting it to your PC…I’ll give you a week from buying it before you’re aksing about how to get it uploading onto the Internet

I’ll second that, and once you have it connected I’ll give you a few days before you start playing with databases and graphing and… the list is endless and gets you hooked quickly

As buying from the US is out if the question, I’m considering the WMR112N a little more.

Does anyone have one, and if so, any comments?

I don’t have a full WMR112 system, but I have a 112 console for use downstairs which listens to my WMR928 sensors. I don’t know whether the 112 sensors are identical to the 928 sensors. In some respects it would seem strange for OS to have to create a different sensor for each station, but maybe they do. The humidity sensor appears to be lower spec, only covering 25-90% where the 928 covers 2-98%, but the other sensors look to have similar specs.

The main difference is that the 112 doesn’t have a serial port, or the option for one. So if you get bitten by the weather bug, you’ll have to buy a different station (or at least a 928 console) to connect it to a PC.

From an ergonomics point of view, I find the 112 operation more fiddly than the 928. The screen is smaller which perhap has something to do with it, but the controls are hidden away behind a door at the bottom of the unit and if you have multiple temperature sensors you need to open the doors to press the buttons to change which sensor is displayed.

So the 112 is reasonably OK if you just want a display of more outdoor conditions than the cheaper ‘weather monitors’ will handle.

I have had the Vantage pro for 4 years now. (the VP pro 2 is out now). A few technical problems, such as bad boards, which they send to you at no chaarge. support is good.

Can someone comment on the differences between the Oregon WMR918 and te 928? I may be able to get one of the latter (used) at a reasonable proce.

I don’t know the detailed differences, but the 928 is a later model than the 918 so it’s probably slightly improved in some respect. I’ve been using a 928 for two years. It’s been reliable and works well with Weather-Display.

The Oregon WMR928 is on sale for
