Fine tuning Leaf Wetness

Brian, the Use the Leaf Wetness from a Davis VP or Grow station to set the rain icon is working great, BUT requires some fine tuning.

  • only show the rain icon if sensor reaches 15
  • only show rain icon if sensor reaches 0 to 15 less than, lets say 3 minutes, (can’t test because hasn’t rained for a while here)

Currently on my backup system its says its raining, because the leaf wetness sensor is not 0.

Just to clarify,
0 on the leaf wetness is dry
1-15 indicates moisture on sensor, with 15 being the wettest.
Currently because of early morning and high humidity, WD is indicating Moderate Rain.

isnt it going to be hard to even get this correct?
is it worth trying to pursue this?

the only reason for doing it was that it was a faster trigger to say its raining, than waiting on a real rain tip…

10.17x has the nexstorm lightnign in its own graph and log file now

Ok, i can see the issue.
Just that one would notice early mornings, when dew is around, WD will indicate moderate rain .

Running now Cheers Cyclone

what i will do is make it so that it has to be 15 before it sets rain in wd maybe then

hi Brian,
thats not a good idea because it is no more working for me!

I have a heating (foliage) put at the other side of the leaf wetness sensor - so there is no dew registrated, because it is always dry, exept when it is raining!!!

Suggestion:
a custom setup for setting the number of the leafwetness, when it should say it its raining
(1-15)

in a new 10.17z
you can fine tune this now, in the extra/misc setup

Thanks Brian.
I think i live to close to the coast. my reading reaches 15 early morning and stays there til sunrise.

why dont you put a heating foliage at the back of the leaf wetness sensor? So dew never will be registrated …
its very simply and it works for me here.

yes, that could be an option, to add another station.
if that is no trouble with Brian.
i would still like the 0-14 scale for farming reasons, but a 15 only for rain sounds good.

ok, i’ve got my second sensor, what size heater have you got, wattage and temperature ?
Thanks

Hi cyclone,
I have a heating foliage with 12 Watt in use, which I located at the back side of the leaf sensor.
It is combinated with an transformator to a voltage from 220 V to 9V. (it must be on 24 hours all days)

I made good experiences here with that solution even in summer and also in winter.
Do you have some more question, let me know.

Roman

all i need to know thanks

Finally installed the 18 watt heater on the 2nd leaf wetness sensor, fits perfect on the back.
just have to wait for some light rain. ( did some cheating today, with a hand sprayer  )
Brian, is there a drizzle icon ?

How about a bit of a modification to the logic, where the sesnor could indicate rain if it is wet but unless there is a bucket tip within x minutes (however long it would take a “light rain” to generate .01" of rain)to confirm it the details and logs for rain get cancelled, or is that too difficult to implement. In that way the rain bucket tip would do all the rain indication with the wetness sensor only being used to indicate the start of light rain.

Seems sensible except it doesn’t appear to work correctly with high humidity without adding heaters to the leaf sensor. This way may be more reliable for us as users. But may be a nasty job. or impossible, to implement.

Same here, i’ve got it 1 for light rain and 15 for moderate, the sensor is now on 4, and not showing light rain
