Ecowitt WH45 Sensor Troubleshooting Tip

I recently experienced an issue with my WH45 sensor from Ecowitt. It’s a 5-in-1 sensor that measures CO2, PM2.5, PM10, Temperature, and RH. Specifically, the PM values suddenly became really high and read at max values.

I tried gently blowing air through the case, but to no avail.

I found that you can take this apart - the bottom of the case unclips, batteries can be removed and the battery case also unclipped and removed. The sensor sits at the top of the case and is held in place by 4 screws. It was relatively simple to take it out, remove the cable from the sensor - looks like a Sensirion SP30:

Then you can gently blow air through the vents - once reassembled that did the trick for me. The AQI readings went back to normal!

How old is it, it should have a life span of about 8yrs they say, it has a self cleaning mechanism fan, that periodically removes deposited particles from the optical chamber.

Its about 3 years old so should still be good. I was under the impression the fan moved air through the unit to take measurements but I guess it would also clean as well by keeping air moving. I have a Purple Air sensor as well - it did something similar and I was told the cause was an obstruction. In the end it cleared itself.
