Crashing again

Went to contact Gateway. I have if anyone is interested an email with my system configuration . Rather than post it and waste space. I can email it.

The OS reported was:OS version: Windows XP 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2
First installed: Sun Feb 8 00:44:06 CST 2004
Browser: MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322

etc…
When I got home and turned on the monitor… I noticed that WD was still updating data, yet… not updateing to the net. So I am going to figure this one out.

I doubt it is WD, but then again it could be that or very probably something else.

Did you install over Win98?

of course not. It came that way from Gateway about 3 years ago. Factory installed. I think that the Eureka program doesn’t recognize xp

What programs do you have running in the background?

If it’s fairly regular crashes… I’m wondering if something is grabbing control of some resource that WD needs.

the only thing other than the zonealarm and all the other tons of stuff is Interwarn. Interwarn has run before. It seems that it runs for 6 hours then crashes. As I write this, The station should have updated 15 minutes ago. I think that when I get home I will find it crashed again.

The log above shows what is running as well. Brian then takes that and plugs it into something and finds out what line it is out of sorts.

SO BRIAN HELP 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O

Eureka recognizes Windows XP Pro on my machine.

yours is the only euraka log info saying windows 98
its not a true windows xp install i think ardvark

the euraka log is not perfect
error numbers with lots of FFFFFFFF just means bad memory, bad windows, etc…
i am thinking it smore your PC ardvark, as you have always have had weather display crash for you from day 1…(and there are not many (5 at one time) people reporting crashes that cant be explained)
maybe time to go back to VWS?

the onlu clue the log above shows is:
|004FBA9C|WeatherD.exe|FormTrayIcon.pas|TFormTrayIcon|WndProc |425 |
which is a component to hide WD in the system tray or the task bar
maybe its a graphic driver issue, who knows
all i can say after years of you haveing troubrl with WD ardvark ,and i dont know how you have put up with it, is that WD does not like your PC or vice versa

maybe time to go back to VWS?
I would rather shut the whole system down, log off the net than do that !!!!!!! Unless you want me to go sub standard !!, :? and if you want me gone, so be it !!!!

Well… Its a Gateway computer and on my system it says XP and has the XPsp2. The odd thing is that it claims it is the British version. Gee they have such as version? That is probably what I get for having bought it at one of their “country stores” that are out of business now.

Probably my next computer will be something other than gateway . and maybe it is time I try to network it to a different computer as I have been thinking about a lot of the time. Just have to find a place to put the other computer. my free area is not much space.

all i can say after years of you haveing troubrl with WD ardvark ,and i dont know how you have put up with it, is that WD does not like your PC or vice versa"
. But since the Eurkea log can't figure it out. I'll deal with it myself. Maybe it is a version conflict with Interwarn . I can take that off the system and see if that has a problem, or maybe the data files are getting a bit big. Or even maybe it is a conflict with Zonealarm Security Suite. None of this I can do until I get home from school.

i dont think i can handle things any more here
i am stressed to the eyeballs with too many things going on

Well, gateway says it win xp home. regardless it does have the sp2 on board. Can’t figure this out. How about this… I am running another virus scan, ran Registry First Aid, At the start of the other thread, Brian had me move some data files and things, it did fine. I think I will run a scan disk then defrag the thing over night. Re start WD ( I went back several versions) after I move those files and see what happens. Also tomorrow. I am going to leave off Interwarn. I upgraded it to their latest version and that just might be the thing that screws up the ftp upload. Maybe the two programs are working at the same time. IF that happens to be the case, I will put on in place of Interwarn something else that doesn’t require anything, like a warning fromSwiftwx or somethng.

That is the only thing I can think of that would be competitng with WD. and of course the 6 hour freeze would be either side of when the internet is quiet and just getting to be busy. This is solvable.

Sorry if I stressed you out, Brian. We are all feeling a lot of stress on this side of the pond, with work and of course the upcoming election an othr things, like all the beheadings and crap. For 2 cents I would move to…

spent all morning at the farm geting fertiliser on
just been at a school pta working bee (cutting trees)
just been sorting out rural fire force issues (service medals for up coming ceremony)

now have some time for wd, and stress levels a bit lower now

sorry i suggested vws…its just that i know how upset people get when then loose data becuase of crashes, and I know WD has not been happy on your system from day 1,so i think you deserve better…

it could be just something on that pc
who knows

at least it hadnt actualy crashed for you, like you thought

if there is any way you could get another pc to use wd , even a loan, to test it …

I don’t lose data. The datalogger on the VP according to Davis “knows” like Santa if we have downloaded the data or not. Anyway, I also back it up with the Weatherlink Software.

I really think considering all , it has to be something interfering with the data upload via ftp. I am going to let Interwarn sit idle over night. and see what shakes loose. This time I noticed the screen had the right data on it, just it seemed not to be uploading it. So that is my thought that something timed itself out. Now the Interwarn was updating so it probably shut out the WD. just a wild guess. Don’t panic.

I don’t think it is WeatherDisplay causing any of this. I emailed you the system config that I have . I did check the swap file size and its fine, so I doubt it is a memory problem, At times DOS was not such a bad thing. Anyway, Have a good day ( or night overhere) No data is lost. we will be fine ( besides Iowa isn’t having any interesting weather with the exception of the wonderful warm September we are having. I am betting on a lot of snow this winter)

Did you run a memory test?

on me or the computer. Yes, I did that. we are fine.

OK. 12:05 pm CDT. What happens at that time?

I fired this up at 7:30pm yesterday, Left Interwarn off completely. It ran until 12:05pm CDT, uploaded then stopped. I even got the 12:01 weather report.

So we had 18 consecutive hours, 5 weather reports emailed and then it stopped.

stopped:
how do you mean.
still going but no more uploads to internet?
or crashed completly

I emailed you the files, but I’ll post here for the crowd.

Later in the day , I noticed that theWDlive had updatd at 1:16 data but the rest of the ftp items had not. Later I noted that no more updates had occured. I went into the folder where all the items updated and confirmed that ony the clientraw.txt had generated data from the program the no more values.

When I got home, the screen had one of those “do you want to send thisstuff to microsoft.” I clicked on the option to vie wthe report and of course nothingshowed. However, the program seems to have exited on its own.

I checked the log files for the last data that updated. There were two entries. One at 12:05 and the next was at 1:16 and then no more. No significant in the program error log . I am guessing that somethng caused the program to time itself out , another attempt, time out and then quit.

strange…

make sure in the control panel that the XP firewall is disabled. Since your using zone alarm. also might want to run an hard drive diags from the manufactuerer, eg if its a seagate hard drive then download seatools. you might want to be safe and run a webbase virus scanner like www.antivirus.com, which changes you to trendmicro and click on the personal tab and run housecall.

Geek is not just a title but a profession.

is off. first thing I made sure of. I appreciate the help, I have already done the virus check, thing. etc… I can’t even be seen on the net.

I have good security, the HD is fine and the computer memory is better than mine…

However, it never hurts to try your suggestions again…

i think we have found the problem
8)

aardvark,
Seems to me like your “protection” from the outside world is a bit much. Who are you using as a service provider? I see in your profile you are using a cable modem so why not configure a router behind it on the local side, one with a good firewall, use the Microsoft firewall as a secondary, and disable all the rest. Most good routers have the ability to ignore inbound WAN pinging to keep people from port-scanning you to eliminate hackers. Also, your provider should be monitoring traffic, pings, etc, to keep an eye on everything. Seems to me like you have a ton of Internet security that doesn’t need to be running…JMO
Good Luck!
