Clients and XP sp2

How do I get my client version of WD to work after upgrading to XP sp2 ? I also tried the client viewer (clientviewer.exe) and …No Go ! :frowning: I clicked the “unblock” for both when the XP firewall asked, and even tried shutting off the firewall, but still neither will work. I am only running one firewall…the XP native one. My regular LAN functions…internet sharing, file and printer sharing, etc. all work fine. So I know I have the network IP addresses correct. I’m stumped :!: :? …I restored back to SP1 in the meantime, and the clients work fine :?

maybe use the option to use the clientraw.txt file directly, or via http location , instead of the tcp data…if you are not already doing that?

I tried to set the clientraw.txt file location , for the client to use, but network (LAN) locations don’t show in the pop-up…only the local drives show. I’d use the http option, but being on dial up, it’s not too practical. I was hoping someone else had run accross the same problem, and found a work around or fix for using XP SP2. Actually, I really don’t care that much, as I don’t see any real advantage to having a firewall on my network. The native SP1 firewall for the internet and dial-up is plenty. I’m the only one using the LAN, and SP2 added alot of MB to my small hardrive. Thanks anyway Windy

i am glad i use windows 2000 and i dont have to worry about spk2
you could just use say zonealarm,as a firewall, and turn off the windows one…
also, though, try mapping the drive…then it will show up

You can’t beat zone alarm. MS’s own material acknowledges that third party firewalls have more functionality than the XP one.

Hi Kevin,

After installing WinXP SP2 all network shares are disabled by default. You’ve to run the network setup wizard for home / small bussiness networks and install file and printer sharing again.
After doing this, you should be able to see the file shares again.

One other thing to pay attention for is that the computers shuld be in the same workgroup and the same user accounts, having the same password on both PCs, should be used on both machines.

Let me know if that doesn’t help. There’s a way, definitely! 8)

I’ve just installed XP SP2 and now my ftp updates to my webspace will not complete, ftp program opens, files are stored locally to my hard drive but they are not getting uploaded to my webspace ???and hence the ftp program does not close down and i get several ftp processes running…

try ticking use passive mode in the connections setup, ftp/internet setup
must something needed after spk2
that should fix it

try ticking use passive mode in the connections setup, ftp/internet setup must something needed after spk2 that should fix it

That’s done the trick !!! Thanks Brian. What does ‘Passive Mode’ actually do ??

active

The main problem with active mode FTP actually falls on the client side. The FTP client doesn't make the actual connection to the data port of the server--it simply tells the server what port it is listening on and the server connects back to the specified port on the client. From the client side firewall this appears to be an outside system initiating a connection to an internal client--something that is usually blocked.
passive
In passive mode FTP the client initiates both connections to the server, solving the problem of firewalls filtering the incoming data port connection to the client from the server.
