3 am bug and midnight reset on davis vantage pro

Brian,

As I understood from the WD-newsletter you’ve got a DVP up and running now…finally !! ot a couple of things for you to look into :

  • I have noticed that WD always becomes active in the tray ( minimilized in the tray that is ) at 3 :00 am in the morning regardless of the fact that the main internet switch is on or off ( strange )

  • Now you’ve got a DVP running you should look into the midnight reset ASAP . It’s a known "bug "that WD doesn’t get all the data it should . I’ve also noticed that if you safe and exit WD and start it again it doesn’t get all the raindata ( you always have to manually edit these ) that were sitting in the datalogger ( this regardless whether you do this in the afternoon or before the midnight reset )

  • new bug : when I safe and exit wd it usually gives an error ( the executable has caused an error , no logfile in WD -program errorlogfile )
This did happen before bt then only occasionally , now it occurs almost everytime…minor problem though as it does seem t freeze AFTER it has saved the data , so at least that’s not lost.

to stop the 3am one, go to help, about, then untick minimise at 3am

i now have a nights worth of data, so looking at it now
(but we have a house full of sick kids (and mum too) (luckily i dont have it too bad…(a nasty flu virus…winter time here, and school holidays))

WD is handling the midnight roll over perfectly.
SO, either davis has fixed the quirk with the midnight time not being a zero for the hour but being a 12 instead in the latest firmware, OR I have already fixed it recently?

I will look into the rain issue…

Maybe you could get a firmware update done rike, or we try to work together on it////

must be why I have not had many reports of this issue…i.eit only affects the earlier VP’s by the look of it,…

ok, now rainfall:

I tipped the rain gauge manualy
waited for it to show on the console
then waited 1 minute ( i have the data logger set to 1minute)
then started up wd (and set to extract the data from a few minutes ago)

the rain was recorded by WD…it shows on the main screen and the graph
BUT it was not logged in the log file
so that is the bug, yes?
having a look now

good news
i have found and fixed the rain bug in the log file after extracting only a few minutes of data
uploading a new version now
(note, you can , via action, extract data from vp data logger, set to extract the data from the time you assign there (and tick append wd’s log files)

Ok,will download the new version, Brian . Regarding the firmware upgrade : I’m afraid that’s not a possibility right now ( due to cash-flow  ) . I don’t believe Davis’policy on this : in order to be able to upgrade a $ 600 weatherstation to be without bugs , i.e. install the firmware , you have to buy a little gadget which costs another $ 100 !!! I think this is ridiculous : the station should have been fine from the very start and any subsequent updates or improvements should be free of charge , after all what the h**l do you pay the $ 600 for ?!?

well, at least it explains why so few have reported this…
but it looks like then we will have to work together in fixing it for you…the midngith time from a data extraction overnight…and any others affected…
i am sure will be able to…
anwway, i will also be able to fix any other little quirks too

i like the VP.

Rikwes,

My WD is on one of the first VP’s, can you explain this bug to me?

In the US you have 2 options for upgrade, whine persistently to Davis and they’ll lend you the updater, or Ambient will rent you one for I think a month for something like $25.

Steve

the real 9.83d is ready now

the quirk was in the logging of the hour and minute at the midnight change when extracting data from the data logger over that period of time (i.e you had WD not running during the night), and instead of 23 59 then 00 00, which WD looks for to know when one day ends and the next begins, the time (which is from the datalogger) was instead not being logged correctly, which was becuase the data logger reported midnight as hour 12 instead of hour 0…
i think that is what is happening
anway, rikews,if you could do a extract of data from overnight, then post here that section of the log file
so i can have a look
at least i fixed the rain in the log file bug (after the first minute had passed while getting the data it would then start to log ok though)

Ah, so there’s no problem if it’s running 24 by 7?

nope

I’m going to see what happens tonight with the overnight reset and send you the logfile after the midnight reset. Couldn’t also be a problem with how the time is setup on the davis? I have it setup in the 24-hour mode as opposed to the 12 hour ( i.e. 23:59 as opposed to 11:59 PM ). I have also now set the time to 1 minute again with weatherlink ( maybe it wasn’t setup correctly and was still fetching data every half hour , I’m almost certain it must be something stupid like that ) although I’m pretty sure it was at a 1-minute interval…

Oh, as for lending or renting the updater , I guess that one’s out since I live in Holland  I don’t think they will mail me one and hope I’ll send it back

I have my VP set up for 24-hour reporting at 1 minute intervals, and it appears to be working OK. But then, about 6 months ago, Brian and I spent about 3-4 weeks getting the roll-over problem straightened out. I don’t have access to the raw data coming out of the data logger, but the info going into the WD logfiles appears to be accurate.

I’m using the Davis wireless VP without the solar sensor, and using the Envoy to feed the data into WD. According to Davis, the Envoy is nothing more than the console without the LCD screen, although there are obviously some differences in the firmware, since if I try to change the stored configuration, it hangs, and I have to turn it off for approximately a half-hour before it will let me reconfigure it. Supposedly the latest firmware corrects that problem. Guess I’ll have to call Davis and get them to loan me the updater so that I can update the firmware (it’s still under warranty).

Found a new problem , though I mentioned it beore , when already online I get a error of the weatherd.exe when the ftpupload is supposed to start : this suggests this problem is related in some way to the new ftp program …mind you it’s only when already online, not when I let WD dial-in . I think the problem with the datalogger and overnight resets was indeed a problem with the 1-minute interval as I’ve now saved and exited and restarted a couple of times and WD now seems to fetch data of every minute ( before it was every half hour ) . Two questions about that :
how is it possible that the console has somewhere along the line reverted to the default half-hour setting ( it WAS on a 1 - minute interval ) ?
How much data ( for how many hours/days ) can the logger store before it runs out of space with th setting at 1-minute interval ??

I simply can’t keep the computer running 24/7 …that’s why I ask.

I believe (and you should probably check with Davis) that if you run the Weatherlink software, and go into setup, it downloads the current setup from the console. So what you see in the WeatherLink setup screen is what the console thinks it’s configured for.

At 1 minute logging intervals, the Davis VP datalogger can hold approximately 17 hours of data, at 120 minute logging intervals, 6 months of data. There is a tech bulletin somewhere up on the Davis support site that gives you the approximate amount of time that the logger can hold data for each of the different time sampling choices.

The Weather Monitor II’s data logger holds less, approximately 1 days data for each minute of sampling (i.e. every 1 minute=1 day, once every 5 minutes=5 days. etc.). See http://www.davisnet.com/weather/products/weather_product.asp?pnum=7862

problem seems to be fixed, I think the console DID in fact have a life of its own and changed the settings to the default 30-minutes interval

seems ok to me now …still get strange behaviour from the ftp-program though ( even if the permanent connection is unticked or ticked : it doesn’t make any difference whatsoever )
