1 wire, (again)

Well, the link arrived today. I plugged it in, and within 5 minutes, I got the same WD slowdown/crash I was getting with the standard 9097u adaptor AAG supplies.

This went on for quite a while, I finally was able to copy it to the clipboard by just holding the mouse button down on the selected text fo 3 minutes!

which version of wd (not that I think the latest version is going to fix it)
have you tried soldering all the joins?

Can you decribe the layout of your mircolan network .
You must have a corroded joint somewhere ( i think)
have you tried running the Dalllas tmex viewer 3.21 and see if all the rom id’s appear . If some of them are failing ( that will be where the problem is )

WD version is 10.20b.
All my connections are soldered, and all outside connections where I tapped into the cat5 cable are wrapped with electricians putty, then with electrical tape.
Everything shows up correctly on all the diagnostic software I’ve downloaded from AAG.

This is the output from their baro test program:

Init Operation Devices OK , 12/14/2004 1:25:10 AM

one thing:
i have fixed something with the 1 wire, from 10.20k and leo has confirmed this (he is now running stable for a over a week now)
so try the latest version of WD
but , also, you have a star network, which is not recommended.
wiring like xmas tree lights is the prefered method

Ok,
I rewired so that it goes from the link, into the baro, from the baro into the 8540 hum, from the 8540 into the outside ibuttonlink hum, from the outside hum into the weather station, and finally from the weather station into the rain gauge. I also updated to 10.20m.

I started WD at 1:16:41 pm and by 1:19:35 pm it did it’s slow down and crash bit, and as usual as soon as it started to read the baro is when it occured.

If you take the aag barometer unit out of the network .
Does the software continue to run ?

Maybe run your network add sensors to see when it actually falls over ( make sure you run for at least 4 hours ) before adding the next sensor .
Have you tried running on another machine ?

Tried it on 4 different machines.
If I take the baro out, it will run for several hours before it does the slowdown and crash, with the baro in and selected, just a few minutes.
I’m going to try running it on my notebook tonight, it has an Intel cpu, just for the heck of it in case by some wild stretch there’ s something about AMD’s it does not like.

Hi Jeep

Excuse me if you have already tried this in the past Jeep,
I have had success by adding a 100ohm resistor on the data leg close to the Weather station
when I had a similar setup to your own.
my setup is different now though because I have added many more sensors, I still use the AAG Baro.
I just remembered also some time ago I had an intermittent coms port issue which did something similar
I had to add an additional expansion card to the PC, that could be worth looking into if you haven’t already

Regards John

Interestingly enough, it’s now been running an hour on my notebook WITH the AAG baro.
I find it hard to believe that 4 different computer with 4 different motherboards are unable to run it longer than a couple of minutes, and my notebook is doing fine so far…
I have 1 other option I’m going to try if the notebook is still ok when I get up.
I have a usb to serial adaptor. I’m going to try plugging that into a powered usb hub, and then the weather station into that, and see if maybe my desktops just don’t have enough power in the serial ports for the 1 wire.

And John, I may ask for more details on the resistor thing, but I thought using the link would make that un-necessary. Also, hobby boards just shipped me a solar sensor today, so I may ask you about your setup.

I spoke too soon. Everythings working except the wind speed. The rom shows up ok, and there are no error messages, but speed stays at zero.

Speed started working right after my last post!
WD ran with the AAG baro for 11 hours on the notebook. I have to disconnect it now to go to work, so I plugged the 1 wire back into it’s regular computer using the usb to serial adaptor. So far it’s passed the magic 3 minute mark with the baro running. I’ll have to wait till I get home to see if it’s crashed again or not. Keep your fingers crossed!

on the dallas 1 wire email list, lots of people have had the same thing:
their MB and serial port just did not have enough juice to run a 1 wire setup
thats where a USB adaptor might be better

Jeep ,

I’m building a P4 machine from sratch .
I had intermittant problems with the new VIA motherboard P4PB400 FL ( both serial ports and all usb ports ).They would run for a random time and then stop . Had mouse problems as well . :frowning: :?
Hopefully I can RMA the board
Have the motherboard got VIA chipsets ? I’m not saying that VIA has a problem with there chipset either .

I ended up replacing with a new Intel motherboard Albatron Intel 875P( with intel chipset ) no more problems.

It’s been up and running 12 hours, WITH the AAG baro using the usb to serial adaptor.
Weird.
The motherboards I tried using just the serial port before had either via or sis chipsets, Rocketman.

The graphs look excellent. I was getting all kinds of spikes and lows before.

Now I’ll have to see how it runs when my solar sensor gets here… then maybe I can actually use the 1 wire station to update my website!

Well,
It’s been running for about 24 hours now. Only problem is the baro is not changing. Every time WD reads the baro, it reports 1015.3 hpa and 22.1C, and these values have not changed at all the whole time.
Any ideas?

If you using the USB adapter (try removing one humidity sensor off the network )
Also are you running any other USB devices off the PC ? ( take them off - only run the 1 wire mircolan of the PC )

does the aag barometer run by itself ?

I’m using a ilink adapter on my network ( i’ve got more sensor than yourself )
using V1.1a Barometer unit ( JJware sensor )

I’m not using the 1 wire usb adaptor, I am using a usb to serial adaptor with the ilink plugged into that.
I got the baro working by runnin AAG’s baro test software and letting it “initialize” the baro. After I exited that and started WD, the baro was reading ok. I removed the indoor temp/hum sensor, (the 8540) for now and am using the baro for indoor temp. My soloar sensor should be here in tomorrow’s mail, and I figure that should really add to the excitement of getting the 1-wire to work!
I guess I’ll have to break down and buy either a serial board for the computer or a powered 1-wire hub if I want to get all this stuff working at the same time.

My wife’s gonna kill me when i tell her I “need” more stuff for the weather station…

i thiink clicking on reset the aag baro might have done the same thing
good you got that to work

interesting you are using a usb to serial adaptor OK
i guess that is in effect the same thing as what AAG sells (i.e what they sell is a combined usb to serial then a normal serial adaptor for the 1 wire)

a powered USB hub might be another solution too

No, clicking reset the aag baro had no effect. I tried that first!
I have a powered usb hub, already thought about trying that because my webcam is the only thing plugged into it right now. All depends on how the solar sensor works, (or not).
BTW, when I shut down WD and removed the indoors 8540, and started wd up again, the baro is reading ok.
